Life after slavery

While on assignment for my day job, I had the opportunity to visit Gorée Island, just off the coast of Dakar Senegal. This was the last place African slaves saw before starting their perilous journey to the “New World”. It still astounds me how so many things remain to remind us of our horrid past.

I could barely fathom the despair they must have felt right in this spot
The openness and friendliness of the people of Senegal was infectious
Despite the smiles, my eye caught the cap and I could not resist the historical reference here
Art is truly alive on Gorée Island
There is a hope well and alive, across cultural boundaries
Although the young know their history, their future is much brighter than they could ever imagine
After a long day at work on the island, this gentleman had a much needed moment of contemplation
